Girls and Bad Boys

Why do girls like bad boys?

Coming up with an undefiable answer to this is a task as ambitious as proving that Elvis was alive. I know I am not as desperate and idle-minded as those who try to prove what has been taken as fact for the past three decades but let me try a shot at solving one of the great mysteries of modern day dating and perhaps, save a few hearts from being broken (again).

For starters, I’d like to make it clear to everyone that no, I am not writing about bad boys like Robin Padilla in Anak ni Baby Ama or Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum parts 1 and 2. Instead, I am writing about all those boys who shamelessly made mascaras run and guy bashing nights fun.

Yes, I am one of those girls. And so are 99.9% of all my girl friends. (Those who married make the 0.1%.) I spent a great deal of my life after 18 being swept by bad boys only to be dropped with a thud that hurt. And it happened one after the other. Maybe that accounts for the extra pads on my bottom. I should be a 96 lb. stick figure, right?

There have been times when options have been presented to me. But just like most girls I know, I always chose B—the bad boy out of reasons I did not really thought of thinking about. The decision was rather made by instinct and now, I know that girls’ instincts would usually go for danger.

Why do girls like bad boys? Why do girls try to forgive the same guy who made the same mistake over and over again?

Have we become fake dictators—imposing strict rules in our relationships but lifting sentences with just a bouquet and a pair of sad, puppy eyes?

Have we forgotten about symbiosis such that our relationships become either parasitism or predatory?

Or on a deeper note, have our preference for S&M transcended our emotions?

The answers depend on you readers. At the end of the day, I realized that I merely hit the bull’s eye in this entry. Why do girls like bad boys, just like any open-ended question, merits different answers—depending on the context of the one who makes the answer.

So let me just leave you, my clandestine readers, something to think about instead; something that's answerable by yes or no.

Will you let another bad boy hurt you?

The Last Ride

It was a late afternoon in early June on top of the mountains of the east. Rainy.

It was the day you took home your former other half. The former king of the hotstreet already ripped of its glory: its lone throne replaced by felt cushion, the topsecretgold facade already covered by hard plastic, its roar became nothing but a monotonous hum and its swiftness already gone.

I remember how we hugged each other and cried when you broke the news. I knew it was your most prized possession. It was something you built with much bitterness from a previous relationship and with much love that had to be diverted.

I remember that special night you decided to put another throne for a queen. It was the night I decided to leave a young single woman's shoes to be fit for a royalty. We were yelling coffee conversation over the roar of the engines while zigzaging our way among lesser cars in the highway. You fed me with crispy pata, remember? And you introduced me to the other kings of the jungle. I, having a fear of rollercoasters, should have been terrified but I slept like a baby on our way home.

It was the last ride; our last ride together as a happy couple. We'd have other fun times later on. But it was the day when another one of your secrets have been revealed. I should've let it pass. I shouldn't have deprived you of your other possessions, knowing that I was among the reasons we were having that last ride on your most prized car. We could've just enjoyed that silent dinner on top of the mountain; your beer, my juice, our conversation and our then unborn baby. But the consequences of my earlier actions have ruined what we have just fixed up.

It was a long, silent ride home. Your home, actually. But I knew then that our hearts spoke in that silence. We never got tired of conversing, right?

I still feel the loss.

Lia's Last Hurrah

Two Saturdays ago, we gathered up and threw Lia this bridal shower, which Och&Nica have successfully organized. Our resident chef con bartender brought a waiter and made just some of the most fabulous-tasting cocktails we ever tasted. MORE PLEASE!!!

Anyway, the most anticipated part of the party, of course, was the strippers' performance. We actually just paid for one but got a "freebie." It was so funny and scary at the same time. Will post the other pics soon.
